Want to be in control of your hair but are wary of the chemicals in off-the-shelf hair sprays? Try one of these DIY recipes sing ingredients found in your kitchen.
All women who have hair with a mind of its own must be so familiar with a hair spray. This cosmetic product that is liberally sprayed on to keep the tresses in place is not a very modern invention; hair spray has been around since the 1940s. Woman, you were not the first, and will definitely not be the last, to know how to use hair spray to look stylish.
But a hair spray often includes alcohol and polymers, the kind that are found in glue. Ugh! Also, some of the other agents and the propellant make the hair spray highly volatile, which is why most airlines have banned this product from the carry-on items list. People have also been known to suffer from rashes, itchy scalp and allergies and even get asthma attacks. Kind of makes you wonder if you really want that stuff around your head, right?
Why don’t you learn how to make hair spray at home instead? Here’s a simple recipe using products that you probably already have.
2 Amazing Homemade Hair Spray Recipe
#1 Citrus-Lavender hair spray
Step 1: Cut a whole orange (for dark hair) or lemon (for lighter hair) into small pieces and boil it with 2 cups of distilled or filtered water in a small pot until it reduces by half.
Step 2: Strain the liquid through a fine muslin cloth into a measuring cup. If the quantity is less than a cup, add some water. Let the juice cool.
Step 3: While you wait, mix 2-3 tablespoons of good quality vodka (or any other clear grain alcohol) and 6-8 drops of 100% pure lavender (or any other) essential oil in a small bowl. Add this to the cup of juice.

6 Essential Tips To Apply Hairspray Effectively
Tip #1:Hold the spray nozzle at least 30 centimetres away from your hair and keep moving the can.
Tip #2:Make sure the spray nozzle is clear to get a proper mist and not a sticky residue.
Tip #3:For volume, hold your hair upside down and shake it when spraying.
Tip #4:If you have short hair, lift the top layer and apply the spray from the bottom, towards the ends.
Tip #5:Spray only on hair ends if you have a sensitive scalp, as the alcohol can cause dryness.
Tip #6:Apply hair spray before you style your hair. After arranging your hair the way you want, apply a little more spray to hold the style. That’s how you get the look of a fashion show.
Besides locking your style in place, there are many other hair spray uses:
4 Uses of Hairsprays
1. Form curls: You can get curls even if you have poker straight hair. Spray dry hair and use a curling iron to form curls. Spray the hair again while it cools.
2. Tame a few unruly strands: If you don’t wish to use the product all over your head, just spray some into your hands and smooth it over the unruly strands.
3. Cover oily hair: You can hide oily strands by pulling fresher strands on top with a round brush and spraying with sufficient product to keep the hair in place. Avoid sprays that are meant to add shine.
4. Shape eyebrows: Keep eyebrow hair in place by spraying an eyebrow brush with a little hair spray and then using it.
However you decide to use hair spray, remember to wash it off. We recommend Pantene Pro-V Lively Clean shampoo for clean and shiny hair.
